Bricklayer Becomes Oldest Potter in America

Haeger's first
"milk bottle" kiln was
in operation by 1916.

In 1871, the same year of the great Chicago fire, a young German immigrant named David H. Haeger founded the company originally known as the Dundee Brickyard. The Chicago Fire destroyed more than 17,500 buildings and made tens of thousands suddenly homeless. The Dundee Brickyard fired the first of millions of bricks needed to help rebuild Chicago's lakefront, which took 25 years to rebuild.

At the same time, David Haeger and his son Edmund H. Haeger, began laying the groundwork for their company's transition from brickmakers to artisans. By 1900, the year of David H. Haeger's passing, the company was making simple red clay flower pots for the florist trade. In 1912 Edmund Haeger introduced a more sophisticated line of glazed artware and changed Haeger Bricks to Haeger Potteries. Over the next 130 years this small town brickmaker became America's oldest and largest producers of pottery. Mid Century Modern
Royal Haeger Peacock
Red Lava Black Fluted 11 1/2" Vase
Fresh from an unbelievable mid century collector's estate comes this striking 11 1/2" Royal Haeger vase with red peacock lava-like glaze. It is available for purchase on eBay. There are some dings to the rim, more felt than seen, but otherwise is in excellent condition. The bit of white you see on the right side of the peacock glaze looks like a spot of paint, that I'll let you remove. It's a great looking piece. I picked up some other fabulous items from this estate, so please check my other listings for other great finds. Always happy to provide additional photos and combine shipping.
